Abbott Recalls FreeStyle InsuLinx Blood Glucose Meters
On April 17, Abbott announced a recall of the FreeStyle InsuLinx blood glucose meters due to software issues for readings of 1,024 mg/dl and above. The problem is similar to the one seen in some of LifeScan’s OneTouch Verio meters. For extremely high glucose readings of 1,024 mg/dl and above, the meter erroneously subtracts 1,024 mg/dl – e.g., a blood glucose reading of 1,066 mg/dl is displayed as 42 mg/dl. Though such glucose levels are very rare, people who use these meters should follow Abbott’s instructions for replacement meters. Any FreeStyle InsuLinx user can request a free meter replacement or use a software update to fix the error. There are 200,000 Freestyle InsuLinx users in 12 countries across the world, so Abbott is offering an easily accessible online fix. –MN
