Managing diabetes in children can be challenging for many reasons, from difficulties and discomfort due to insulin injections to monitoring for potential diabetes-related complications, not to mention parents’ worries about the safety of various medications. The good news is that researchers are continually working to find better ways to help children with type 1 or type 2 diabetes live more comfortable, healthier lives. Here are several trials looking to enroll children and adolescents with diabetes.
1. Inhaled Insulin for Children With Diabetes
A U.S. clinical trial sponsored by Mannkind Corporation is recruiting children with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the long-term use of Afrezza, an inhaled insulin. A safe and effective inhaled insulin would be an exciting option for families who wish to lessen the number of injections given per day.
2. Can a Twice-Daily Pill Protect Beta-Cell Function?
Adolescents and adults newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes may be eligible to participate in a study evaluating the effectiveness of ladarixin, a treatment that may preserve beta-cell function and delay the progression of type 1 diabetes.
3. SGLT2 Inhibitors for Teens With Type 1 Diabetes
A U.S. clinical trial sponsored by The Hospital for Sick Children is recruiting teens with type 1 diabetes to participate in a study evaluating the effect of dapagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, on kidney function. SGLT2 inhibitors have been shown to protect the kidneys in adults with type 2 diabetes, but they are not currently FDA-approved for people with type 1 diabetes.
